Current Trail Conditions – As of August 3rd, 2025

Current Weather Conditions:

  • Perfect hiking conditions

Update: Simmenfälle – Tierbergsattel Route

  • This route has been repaired by the trail crew.

  • Especially around the Rezligletscherseeli, new bridges have been installed, so meltwater crossings are now easy.

Recommended Gear

  • Hiking boots with stiff soles

  • Trekking poles

  • Whether you wear approach shoes or trail runners is up to you, but good grip is essential.

Summit of Wildstrubel and Plaine Morte Glacier

  • For crossing the Plaine Morte Glacier, glacier equipment (rope, ice axe, crampons) is recommended

Current Hazard Assessment
Objective hazards:
• Thunderstorms, after a thunderstorm, trail traces in scree or loose terrain may be washed out or narrower than before. However, with sufficient experience, this is not a problem.

Subjective hazards (due to weather conditions):
• Strong sun exposure, which can cause sunburn and exhaustion – don’t forget sun protection!
• Dehydration – in warm temperatures, be sure to carry enough water and drink regularly.

Please note that it gets chilly in the evening at the hut – therefore, bring long clothing such as a fleece jacket, a long-sleeve shirt, a light wind or softshell jacket, and long hiking pants. We also recommend carrying a buff or a hat for your head.

Drinking Water: Supply Information
The Wildstrubel Hut is located in a karst region.
At Rawil Pass (and along the trail to Rawilseeleni), there is no natural source of drinking water – the terrain mainly consists of karst formations and scree fields. The small lakes along the path are only fed by snow and rainwater.

The Rawil Lake is also a mountain lake fed by meltwater and rain. The water is usually clear and fresh but does not represent an official drinking water source. Since mountain lakes in karst areas can accumulate contaminants, it is recommended to boil or filter water from Rawil Lake before drinking.

Additionally:
Water in karst regions is often not potable because it flows unfiltered through underground cracks and caves, potentially carrying impurities. It lacks natural filtration like soil or sand layers.
The absence of visible flowing water does not automatically mean the water is clean – on the contrary, it can be bacterially contaminated.

Safety note:
If you need to collect water from natural sources or ponds on the way, always boil it, treat it with a suitable outdoor water filter, or use disinfection tablets.

A reliable karst spring is located at Simmenfälle / Siebenbrünnen (Sibe Brünne). There, the Simme water emerges directly from the rock – crystal clear, cool, and with a flow of up to 2,800 liters per second. Ideal for refilling water bottles if you ascend from that side
